Need for speed

IMAGINE the Bryan Adams hit Summer of 69 played on the guitar in merely 16 seconds. Twenty two-year-old Apernit Singh, who claims to be India’s fastest guitarist, can pull off 22 notes in 0.76 seconds and play nonstop for 72 hours.

Singh, who’s been strumming since age seven, has just released his first album, Apernit-India’s Fastest Guitarist. ‘’When I was young, I won a number of inter-collegiate competitions. That’s when I set about testing my own speed,'’ says the Bangalore-based musician, asserting that co-artists like Mika Singh can vouch for his talent.

The unplugged version of the first track on his album, Dhoondo Kahan, has helped him make his foray into Bollywood, for a movie titled Tuk-Tuk Bombay, directed by Raoul Randolf, due to release in October. The Shred-mix version of the same track has been selected for the movie Postcard, starring Soha Ali Khan, Shayan Munshi and Zeenat Aman.

He’s also helping Mika cash in on the recent Rakhi Sawant lip-lock controversy with his forthcoming song titled Ae Bhai, in which Apernit plays the guitar. ‘’I have also worked with Harry Anand, the Meet brothers and recently did a show with Euphoria in Ahmedabad,'’ he adds. Singh has also opened for the Bombay Vikings and Strings.

Though he’s been trained in Hindustani Classical music, Singh draws inspiration from legendary guitarists Joe Satriani, Michelangelo, John Petroci and has also mentored 2,000 aspiring guitarists during his four year teaching career. ‘’I hope to establish a school some day for music enthusiasts, promoting a combination of guitaring and singing in Hindi pop music,'’ he says.

But Bollywood is clearly the final destination as his wish list includes jamming with Himesh Reshammiya, Pritam and Anand Raj Anand.
